Visit of Town Planning Expert

Application for a free grant not exceeding £900

A Committee has recently been appointed in Hong Kong to assist in the preparation of a comprehensive plan for the davalopment of the Colony, The main development contres round the port and the two cities of Victoria and Kowloon.

2. There was need, even before the war, for the replanning and rebuilding of the old part of Victoria where Chinese housing conditions were recognised as bad. The demaga caused by the war offers a notable opportunity for carrying out improvements. The great importance of the port and harbour to Hong Kong, must also, of course, be taken into account in any development plano.

3c The Governor of Hong Kong fully shares the Committas '& views, and has strongly recommended the engagement of a Town Planning Expert of high repute to pay a visit to Hong Kong and advise generally oo the matter. It is considerad that the expenses incurred in the visit of such an expert might be met from the Colony 'e allegation under the Colonial Development and Welfare Act, and an application 18 submitted occordingly.

40 The Governor has rejussted that Processor Sir Patr tok Abercrombie should be saked to undertake this work. He attachus great importance to securing the services of a man of high reputation. The fee inserted in the atteched financial summary is that #bach was paid Professor Abercrombie for a comparable visit to Cyprus. Should he or a consultant of equal standing not be available, a reduc fee should be payable.
